It is with sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Averil "Cookie" Arkbuckle

 

Oklahoma AIDS Care Fund would like to express deepest sympathy to Mary Arbuckle and Other Options at the passing of Averil "Cookie" Arbuckle. Cookie was a tireless worker for Oklahomans living with HIV/AIDS. She was our 2006 Richard May Award reciepient, which recognizes individuals for their exceptional efforts in HIV/AIDS service. Cookie was a true example of compassion and dedication. She will be missed.

 

A celebration of Cookie's life will be held on Thursday, April 22 at 3pm, Epworth United Methodist Church, 1901 North Douglas Avenue, Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Other Options, 3005 N. May Avenue, Oklahoma City, 73107.

It’s been 28 years since AIDS was first identified in the United States. Many still believe the virus to be one that belongs to sub-Saharan Africa. Yet, more people than ever before are living with HIV today in America.


At the end of 2007, the CDC estimated that 468,578 of us live with AIDS, up by 20,000 since 2006. The real story though is that many public health officials believe the actual number to be around 1.1 million. This large discrepancy is due to factors like anonymous testing services and those who may be living with the infection but have not yet been diagnosed.

Vaccine prevents AIDS for first time

For the first time, an experimental vaccine has prevented infection with the AIDS virus, a watershed event in the deadly epidemic and a surprising result. Recent failures led many scientists to think such a vaccine might never be possible.

The vaccine cut the risk of becoming infected with HIV by more than 31 percent in the world's largest AIDS vaccine trial of more than 16,000 volunteers in Thailand, researchers announced Thursday.
